Freelance technical designers charge between $50 to $2,000+ for a tech pack. This is a big range, and while $2,000 sounds like a lot, I have students who charge this! The average range is about $300-$1,000 and is in line with what brands should expect a tech pack to cost.
To help you figure out your pricing, I surveyed my email list and asked people on LinkedIn about their freelance fashion rates. I received over a hundred replies, including rates for technical design services like tech packs and flat sketches.
Real-Life Examples of Freelance Technical Fashion Design Rates
Technical Design / Tech Pack Rates
Real-Life Examples of Charging by Project:
- “Ideally, my rate should be closer to $80 an hour, but currently, I charge $45 for most services and $80 for a flat technical sketch (front, back, and one inside view). With new clients, I start at a higher rate to reflect this value, gradually increasing rates over time.”
“Recently, a client found $75 per hour for technical design, including grading, too expensive, so I offered a project rate instead. It’s crucial to regularly reassess and adjust pricing to reflect expertise, experience, and the value provided, balancing between hourly and project-based rates based on the client and project type. That said, I feel like I lose out when I charge hourly.” – Technical Designer from New York
