Best Practices for Drawing Fashion Sketches in Illustrator

I discovered a flat sketch of a t-shirt in the Adobe Illustrator application folder…and when I opened it, I was pretty unimpressed with how the fashion sketch was drawn and assembled. Simply put, the quality was subpar for Adobe’s high standards.

In this step by step video tutorial, I’ll show you how to use some best practices in drawing a t-shirt fashion flat in Illustrator.

We’ll cover:

  • How to draw half the sketch and use the Reflect Tool along the center front to complete it (1:28)
  • How to join anchor points along the center front of the sketch (2:41)
  • How to create a pattern brush for double needle top stitching (DNTS) using 2 dashed paths (3:06) – and the benefits of doing it this way
  • The easiest way to draw ribbing on your fashion flat sketch in Illustrator (4:50)
